Jim Crow laws were laws at the state and local levels that codified discrimination against African-Americans in the United States. While popularly thought to be exclusive to the Southern region of the U.S., 36 states had Jim Crow laws. Beyond just the legal classifications, the laws help enforce discrimination, segregation, and white privilege as a way of life.
